GOTR Builds Character

“Alexa, what’s the definition of character?”

“As a noun, character refers to the attributes or features that make up a person’s personality or image. A person of good character is often described as trustworthy, reliable, honest, courageous, or has integrity.”

So, what does ‘character’ have to do with Girls On The Run?

Let’s unpack that.

The GOTR curriculum teaches an array of skills that the girls can use at home, in school, and in the community. Gratitude. Making and keeping friends. Positive self-image. Conflict resolution. Confidence. Leadership. Resilience. Managing emotions. Empathy. At the same time, the girls are practicing for a 5K and working on a community impact project, which serves as the culmination of their hard work physically but also forces them to utilize the character and skills they’ve built up throughout the season to give back to their community.

I’ve been a SoleMate and Coach for Girls On The Run for several years now. Having a front row seat to the girls as they develop and practice their skills throughout the season is such a rewarding experience. I’m routinely reminded what’s important, what truly matters. I’m grateful for the opportunity to pour into these young girls. Maybe, just maybe, I can arm them with a skill I didn’t have at their age. But what they don’t realize is how much they’re pouring into me. With every practice, and every lesson, I’m reminded to do things like “stop and take a breather” or “visualize my star power.” Every day I’m reminded that “words matter.” They make me a better version of myself – at home, at work, and in my community.

GOTR isn’t merely a running group for girls. It’s SO MUCH MORE than that. Running is one aspect of the program, but it’s certainly not the most important aspect. The growth in character that comes from the program is infectious – whether you’re a participant, a coach, or watching from the sidelines. My mother has always said that one person can make a difference. You can make a difference to a young girl in our community. But it’s also entirely possible that a young girl in our community can have an impact on you.

The Girls on the Run program provides skill-building experiences to nurture physical, social and emotional competencies that can be applied in other areas of life such as home, school and in the community. Completing a 5K at the end of the season gives participants a tangible opportunity to apply what they learned. To learn more, please click here now.
