GOTR Cincinnati

Maria Kretchik - Remarkable Volunteer

“Girls on the Run builds confidence in the most remarkable way—by helping each girl discover her own path to it. You see it in the girl who begins the season hesitant to ask for help but finishes by confidently offering encouragement to her teammates. It’s palpable when a girl holds her head higher after deciding she can run one more lap, or when she starts to believe in her voice after taking notice that her teammates listening. Girls on the Run helps every girl discover that confidence takes many forms, each as unique and beautiful as she is.” - Maria Kretick, 30x GOTR Coach and 5K Volunteer Coordinator

Maria Kretchik knows a lot about how Girls on the Run gives participants building blocks to create a strong foundation as they navigate life. As a GOTR Coach for 30 seasons, she has witnessed firsthand how transformative the program truly is. We can say with certainty that she has touched many lives over the past 15 years and the experience has shaped hers, too.

Many people say they wish GOTR existed when they were in elementary school. But for Maria, the program found her at exactly the right moment. “I was a young 20-something and GOTR appeared in my life just when I needed it. It’s never too late. Ever!” Maria commented earlier this year during a panel discussion with Girls on the Run International Founder Molly Barker. Molly later shared that she was truly impressed by Maria’s passion and presence with her teams.

Molly is not the only person to confirm Maria’s standout performance as a GOTR Coach. Earlier this year, GOTR Cincinnati Executive Director Annie Horn nominated Maria for a Remarkable Volunteer Award from GOTR International. “Maria’s journey with GOTR showcases her altruistic spirit and unwavering commitment to empowering young girls. By serving as a role model and mentor, she not only fosters physical wellness through running but also instills life skills and confidence in her participants.”

As such, she was recognized with the coveted award earlier this year! This award shines a bright light on the impact volunteers make on the organization. Quite simply, it’s just one small way we thank them for helping make our mission a reality and being the heart behind our organization. You can read more here

We are endlessly grateful to Maria for helping GOTR girls find their confidence and joy season after season and could not be more proud to call her a teammate and friend.
